WELCOME

Spirit of the Woods Museum is Northern Michigans hidden gem. With a vast assortment of Michigan native animals set in diaramas like their own natural settings, they are sure to please people of any age. We also have touch boards by each display so you get a chance to not only see animals in the wild up close, but you get to feel what the fur is really like.

Our musem also an extremely large collection of Native American Artifacts, mainly from the Great Lakes Region. This collection was started by George Guntzviller, grandfather to the present owner Voss and Pat Guntzviller. The collection was started well over 100 years ago. When he would find arrowheads and different artifacts while he was plowing the land with a horse and a walk behind plow he would pick them up and put them in the coffee can that he had attached to the plow. Two of George's sons , Marvin & Harvey, also took an intertest in the artifacts and added to the collections as years went by. Voss and Pat have also add pieces to make this a wonderful site to behold.

The museum has been a great resource for teachers who teach fourth grade Michigan history. They can come and visit and see the many tools and arrowheads that ancient people made to be able to survive with.

Teachers are welcome to come ahead to fit the musuem information into their studies.

We welcome all bus tours, school groups of all ages, pre-school and handycap groups. Also senior citizens and church groups as well. We are completely handycap accessible and stroller friendly.

We also have a great gift shop with over 70 styles of Minnetonka Moccasins for all ages and many great gift items such as candles, jewelry, nightlights, shirts, gift stones, petoskey stones and many more items, many of which are made in the United States.
